Col des Aravis

Mountain road with a cyclist, surrounded by green hills and distant snow-capped peaks under a clear blue sky.

Today we tackle three famous mountain passes of the Route des Grandes Alpes, beginning our journey with the tight and twisty roads of the Cormet de Roselend. We pass through Beaufort on our descent, home to the regions famous Beaufort cheese. Next, we tackle the amazing Col des Aravis, a road that begins by carving its way out of the mountain side, before climbing up to the summit by a seemingly endless supply of corners. The third and equally fun Col de la Colombière, with it’s wide open hairpin bends, is the final of the three famous mountain passes, but not our last of the day. We journey home through the classic alpine landscapes of Areches and the Col de Pré, soaking up the stunning lake views, of the Lac de Roselend, before descending back into Bourg Saint Maurice.

DAY 3

TOUR DE LA VANOISE

Daily Facts :

Col de la Madeleine

Aerial view of a winding mountain road with multiple sharp curves surrounded by trees and foliage.

Our day begins with the ascent of the iconic Col de l’Isèran, Europe’s highest paved mountain pass at 2,764M in altitude. After summiting, we cross over into the heart of the Vanoise National Park, with it’s picturesque descent to Bonneval-Sur-Arc, listed as one of the “most beautiful villages of France”. From here we meander down into the Maurienne Valley, and take a detour up Les Lacets de Montvernier, an incredible feat of engineering, with seventeen switch backs carved out of the mountainside. We return back into the Tarentaise Valley, via the Col de la Madeleine, a regular feature of the Tour de France, packed full of superb chicanes and hairpins on the ascent. Our final descent of the day brings us though several traditional mountain hamlets before our return home.

We begin our day winding up the forest-lined roads that lead to the Col du Petit Saint Bernard, and the French/Italian border. We then drop into the beautiful Aoste Valley before taking on Robyn’s personal favorite the Col du Grand Saint Bernard, with its breathtaking views and amazing corners. On to our third country of the day, we enter Switzerland where our return begins with the fast flowing bends of the Col de la Forclaz, leading back into France and through the world-renowned resort of Chamonix, at the foot of the mighty Mont Blanc. The day is not yet done as we ascend into the Val d’Arly and pack in both the picturesque Col des Saisies and the Cormet de Roselend, to complete our epic adventure.
