We named this tour Ultimate Alps for a reason. If you’re looking for the biggest rides, the longest days and the most altitude gain, combined with some incredible, lesser known routes, then this is definitely the tour for you. The Ultimate Alps tour is a maximum ride time, minimal stops, tick list triumph that will not leave you wanting. 

DAY 1

Col de la Forclaz

After arriving at Geneva airport, where you will be met by Robyn, Guide My Ride founder and Guide, a private transfer will take you directly to the motorbike hire pick up point. Your luggage will be transported ahead of you to the chalet. Now we enjoy the first guided ride of the trip, passing over the Col de la Forclaz, with its stunning views of Lake Annecy. We then make our way into the Tarentaise Valley, and up to Bourg Saint Maurice, where an arrival aperitif will greet you at the chalet, followed by a welcome meeting.

  • If you are joining us on your own motorbike then you can make your way directly to the chalet, to arrive between 4 and 5pm, in time for the welcome meeting and apéritif.

TOUR DU MONT BLANC

Col du Grans St Bernard

It needs no introduction. The tour du Mont Blanc is one of the ultimate classics of the Alps; three countries in a day and epic views of the Mont Blanc from all sides. We begin our day winding up the forest-lined roads that lead to the Col du Petit Saint Bernard, and the French/Italian border. We then drop into the beautiful Aoste Valley before taking on Robyn’s personal favorite the Col du Grand Saint Bernard, with its breathtaking views and amazing corners. On to our third country of the day, we enter Switzerland where our return begins with the fast flowing bends of the Col de la Forclaz, leading back into France and through the world-renowned resort of Chamonix, at the foot of the mighty Mont Blanc. The day is not yet done as we ascend into the Val d’Arly and pack in both the picturesque Col des Saisies and the Cormet de Roselend, to complete our epic adventure.

DAY 3

TOUR DE TARENTAISE

Col du Tra

Welcome to our backyard. Today we explore the overlooked and hidden gems of the Tarentaise Valley. We start by the locally known ‘balcony road’ passing through traditional Savoyard hamlets. We then make our way up to Val Thorens, Europe’s highest ski resort at 2,300M before descending into the beautiful Bozel Valley. From here we head next into the multiple narrow harpins of the Col du Tra, before following that up with the twenty-one hairpins of La Plagne. If you’re not hairpinned-out then there’s the wonderfully windy roads up to the resort of Peisey-Vallandy, where we traverse over to Les Arcs before heading home.

DAY 4

ARAVIS 8

Col des Aravis

Today we tackle three famous mountain passes of the Route des Grandes Alpes, beginning our journey with the tight and twisty roads of the Cormet de Roselend. We pass through Beaufort on our descent, home to the regions famous Beaufort cheese. Next, we tackle the amazing Col des Aravis, a road that begins by carving its way out of the mountain side, before climbing up to the summit by a seemingly endless supply of corners. The third and equally fun Col de la Colombière, with it’s wide open hairpin bends, is the final of the three famous mountain passes, but not our last of the day. We journey home through the classic alpine landscapes of Areches and the Col de Pré, soaking up the stunning lake views, of the Lac de Roselend, before descending back into Bourg Saint Maurice.

DAY 5

REST DAY

Rest days are important to offer that perfect balance of ride time and relaxation, so that you can make the most of your holiday. Take some free time to explore the local area yourself, with or without your bike, make the most of the activities Les Arcs/Bourg Saint Maurice have to offer in the summer season, or simply relax on the chalet terrace with a good book. Whatever you want to do.

VANOISE & BEYOND

Col du Galibier

Today’s route involves many of the climbs made famous by the Tour de France. We start by making our way into the Maurienne Valley via the infamous Col de l’Isèran, then zig zag our way up corner after corner of the excellent Col du Télégraphe. On to the highlight of our day, the mighty Col du Galibier, where sweeping corners are surrounded by incredible scenery on the way to it’s 2,642M summit. From here we pick up the Col du Lauteret, which we follow for the length of the valley ready to tackle the infamous 21 hairpins of Alps d’Huez. Our day comes to a close as we cruise our way through the barren landscapes of the Col de Glandon, finishing by passing over the Col de la Croix de Fer and finally the Col de la Madeleine

DAY 7

SHOULDA GONE BLUFFY

Val d’Arly

Today we head out over the Cormet de Roselend before dropping into the Val d’Arly, with it’s tall gorge sides, white water river and mystical forests. After summiting the Col d’Aravis we enter into the rolling landscapes of the Chaîne des Aravis, where we spend our day exploring the quiet and winding roads of this beautiful area. A mini highlight of the day, is the Château de Monthon-Saint-Bernard, a one thousand year old castle on the Col de Bluffy.  On the journey home we pass over the Col de Tamié, known for it’s cheese made exclusively by monks at the Tamié Abbey. Finally we venture through the fortified, medieval, Cité de Conflans, originally established to protect the entrance to the Tarentaise Valley.

THE ITALIAN JOB (PT1)

Colle del Nivolet

This two-day epic adventure explores the Italian Alps, climaxing at the film location of the infamous ‘cliff hanger’ scene from the film “The Italian Job”. 

We begin our trip with a tree-lined ascent through the Montvalezan Forest, crossing straight into Italy via the Col du Petit Saint Bernard. After our first Italian coffee stop we travel into the Aoste Valley, with a detour through the Italian ski resort of Pila. Here we begin our exploration of the stunning foothills of the Italian Alps and their lesser known roads, to arrive at the base of the Col du Nivolet, the start point for an epic 2000M climb, leading us to our overnight stop.

DAY 10

THE ITALIAN JOB (PT2)

Mont Cenis

Day two of our Italian escapade is spent ridge-hopping the fringes of the Italian Alps for some stunning views of traditional Italian mountain villages and out across the plains towards Turin. Skirting back round into the Susa Valley, we begin our ascent of the spectacular Mont Cenis, where we pass the beautiful Lac du Mont Cenis and arrive back into France. We then return to the Tarentaise Valley taking in one last mountain pass, the Col de l’Iseran, this time from the Maurienne Valley side.

DAY 11

BIG BAUGES

Col du Frêne

We begin this day by going up and over the Cormet de Roselend, picking up some pretty vineyard-lined roads on our approach to the Massif des Bauges, a UNESCO Géoparc. We then access the Bauges, via the short but punchy Col du Frêne, to snake our way up through the rolling hills that offer a playground of meandering turns, surrounded by stunning landscapes. After summiting Mount Semnoz, we then drop back into the heart of the Bauges, exploring the side that overlooks Lac du Bourget, France’s largest natural glacial lake. We take in another two mountain passes, including the Col de la Madeleine before returning home.

DAY 12

DEPARTURE DAY

Lake Annecy

Enjoy breakfast before packing up. Your luggage will be collected and driven to the bike hire drop off point, whilst we make our way out of the Tarentaise Valley, taking in the surrounding views of some of the mountains you have spent your time exploring. We snake around the shores of Lake Annecy, before passing through Annecy itself, capital of the Haute Savoie region. Onwards to the motorbike hire drop off point to return your motorbike and be met by your private transfer, which will take you back to Geneva Airport with your luggage.

  • If you are joining us on your own bike then you can enjoy a delicious breakfast, before making your way home or onwards, leaving the chalet before 10am.
